Hullo now midgets! How’s your weekend so far? Too early to tell? Good! Heh.
Anyhoo, today am gonna tell a bit on the usual acronym used in drilling. Remember the weeks that yours truly had to attend morning meetings? We would be given this ’6 days look ahead’ and it felt like I was reading in Sanskrit with all the acronyms all over it. So now am going to enlighten you lot on how cuckoo/creative those engineers can be. And no, I don’t mean it in a bad way. Honest! So here goes..
1) HWDP
Stands for heavy weight drill pipe. This is one of the normal acronyms, mind you. Refers to those massive 36″ or 30″ conductors. What I don’t get is why must they shorten the heavy weight as well. Can go with heavy weight DP no? Plus, it’s a mouthful to pronounce. Don’t believe me? Try to say that, super fast.
2) RIH
Stands for run in hole. Refers to the time when they err.. slid in the casing in the hole/well.
3) POOH
Not to be confused with the lovable bear. I know I did. *facepalm* This one stands for pull out of hole, and refers to the time when they pull out casings.
4) WOC
Stands for wait on cement. Refers to the time needed for the cement to dry/harden. Not to be confused with OWC. That’s obedient wives club to those who haven’t got the foggiest clue. Totally two different things. Don’t make me elaborate any further.
5) WOW
Stands for wait on weather. I admit, when I first saw this I was kinda confused. Thought there was some kind of celebration going on that I wasn’t aware of (how dare them). Turned out this refer to the time when weather is picking up, and hence certain major activity (like jacking down the rig or towing to another location) will have to be put on hold.
And now, the mother of all acronyms.. (at least in my opinion)
6) XO
I don’t know about you, but the only XO that I know of is the drinkable kind. So how am I supposed to know that this one refers to cross over?? Why couldn’t they come up with less confusing short form like x-over? Tsk. This by the way refers to cross over joint. What’s that? Casing with different threads at either end so you can use it with a few types of joint.
Ok, I think that’s all for now. Mind you, my description on those acronyms may not be accurate. They are based on my understanding as a non-technical person aka the department’s bimbo.
Have a good weekend midgets! Be safe!
